About Clear Channel Radio, CA
Daniel Granger: Prison Fellowship International (PFI)
Prison Fellowship International is a non-governmental organization that currently operates in 112 countries around the world. The organization was founded three years after the inception of Prison Fellowship United States in 1976, when similar organizations began to appear in England, Australia, Costa Rica, and Canada. The original United States branch was the brainchild of Charles W. Colson after he was released from prison, convicted for offences related to the Watergate scandal. The mission of PFI is to mobilize Christians in ministry to prisoners, ex-prisoners, victims, and their families and to advance the cause of restorative justice. The activities of PFI can primarily be broken down into six categories. First, the organization provides support to prisons through chaplaincy and works to increase the role of church in the prison system. PFI’s Global Assistance Programme partners the organization with volunteer medical professionals to provide short-term assistance to acute medical needs and emergencies in prisons. Second, PFI helps provide post-prison support by helping church-based volunteers serve as a bridge between prison and the community. The organization’s Geo Trust gives small start-up loans to qualifying ex-prisoners, hoping them start their own small business and forge a place within their community. Third, PFI assists the children and families of prisoners through the Angel Tree Programme, an outreach sponsorship program. The organization is also working to develop other programs that run camps, retreats, and year-round events. Fourth, the PFI Centre for Justice and Reconciliation furthers the principles of restorative justice, which looks to repair damage done by crime and restore formerly incarcerated offenders back to a meaningful and rewarding positions in their communities. Fifth, the organization promotes faith-based prisons, and sixth, the organization provides consultation to the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council. I am honored to be able to support such an important organization that is making a tangible impact on the lives of prisoners internationally.
